Lord of Flies :: essays research papers

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  If we take a look at the definition of human nature, we can see that it is the set of traits or characteristics that all of us as human beings posses. This includes compassion, love, hate, selfishness, etc. From the day we enter this world, these qualities have been implanted in us and they determine what kind of a person we are. For example, is a convict sitting on death row equal to Mother Theresa? According to human nature we all posses the same essence, so what makes the two so different from each other? Has one altered their nature?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  A group of English boys are stranded on an island after the plane they were on was shot down. This is the central plot of William Golding’s, â€Å"Lord of the Flies.† It is the internal struggle between â€Å"good† and â€Å"bad.† Each character represents a component of society. Ralph possesses leadership, creativity, and responsibility. He is elected leader of the group and tries to organize everyone under a single civilization on the island. Jack represents the barbarous, savage, and crude attribute that we all own. Piggy is the intellect and voice of reason of the group. Simon represents spirituality and a deep connection with nature. He is compassionate and kind hearted; always thoughtful of others.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  We, as humans, are not perfect. Some are crude while others more sensitive. Rules and punishment restrain our inner â€Å"monster.† Following rules and orders is infringed by a system of laws; it is not part of our human nature. If put in an environment without these laws or fear of consequences I think that all of us would be different. These boys were used to life in England, raised as stoics in a preparatory and singing in the choir. How then did those same choirboys turn into a chaotic and murderous group? Let’s face it, if we were left alone in a room with no supervisor taking a test many of us would cheat. We would not worry about getting caught or what consequences it would bring. That is our human nature. It can never be changed. Even Ralph, who has never been to a hunt, gets caught up in the excitement of the chase and gives in to his inevitable nature when he participates in the killing of Simon.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When the boys were first stranded on the island the first thing they wanted to do as recreate the society they had grown up on and try to get rescued.

Anti Terrorism: Within India Essay

The Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002 (POTA) was an anti-terrorism legislation enacted by the Parliament of India in 2002. The act replaced the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO) of 2001 and the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) (1985–95), and was supported by the governing National Democratic Alliance. The act was repealed in 2004 by the United Progressive Alliance coalition. The bill was defeated in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house) by a 113-98 vote,[4] but was passed in a joint session, as the Lok Sabha (lower house) has more seats. It was not meant as a substitute for action under ordinary criminal laws. The act defined what a â€Å"terrorist act† and a â€Å"terrorist† is, and granted special powers to the investigating authorities described under the act. To ensure certain powers were not misused and human rights violations would not take place, specific safeguards were built into the act.[8] Under the new law, a suspect could be detained for up to 180 days without the filing of chargesheet in court. It also allowed law enforcement agencies to withhold the identities of witnesses, and to treat a confession made to the police as an admission of guilt. Under regular Indian law, a person can deny such confessions in court, but not under POTA.[9] [edit] Repeal Once the Act became law, many reports surfaced of the law being grossly abused.[10] Claims emerged that POTA legislation contributed to corruption within the Indian police and judicial system,[11] and human rights and civil liberty groups fought against it. The use of the act became one of the issues during the 2004 general election. The United Progressive Alliance committed to repealing the act as part of their campaign. On October 7, 2004, the Union Cabinet approved the repeal of POTA.[12] NDA and other parties condemned this act of publicity. NDA asked UPA to introduce the Act again, but Congress criticized it and did not pass the Act. In November 2008, after the attacks happened in Mumbai, Narendra Modi and Lal Krishna Advani accused UPA government for not passing the Act, which would have prevented the attacks.[citation needed] Activists supported to BJP government for this. [edit] Prominent POTA cases * Vaiko, a prominent Tamil politician, was controversially arrested under the POTA for his support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.[13][14] * S.A.R. Geelani, a lecturer at Delhi University, was sentenced to death by a special POTA court for his alleged role in the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament. He was later acquitted on appeal by the Delhi Bench of the High Court on a legal technicality.[15] * Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami group, arrested under POTA.[16][17] * Raghuraj Pratap Singh, a.k.a. Raja Bhaiya, a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Kunda, India was arrested on the orders of then Chief Minister, Mayawati Kumari. He was sent to jail under POTA.[18][

Human Resource Management Overview Human Resource Management is the management of an organization’s employees. When a company designates a Human Resource (HR) department, those in HR are the ones responsible for overseeing the well-being of personnel in the workplace, and focus on how to attract, hire, train, motivate, and maintain employees of the organization. (DeCenzo, Robbins, Verhulst, 2013, p4). According to David S. Bright from the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University, â€Å"HR activities include recruitment, selection, training and development, compensation, benefits, performance appraisal, employee relations, health and safety, and strategic HR planning.† Suppose I was hired by a company as a Human Resource Generalist to create a Human Resource Department for the organization, I would focus on the four basic functions which include: staffing, training and development, motivation, and maintenance. Or in other terms, â€Å"we might say that HRM is made up of four activities: hiring people, preparing them, stimulating them, and keeping them.† (DeCenzo, Robbins, Verhulst, 2013, p33). First, I would address the staffing and training of employees for the department. As the department grows and develops, my attention would then be concentrated on motivating and maintaining those employees I have put in place.
